New Journal - July 10, 2003 - Hawaii / Two More Days!!!
This web page was set up to provide a forum for me share and compile my
pictures and emails. I left San Diego, CA on January 6, 2003 for a scheduled
six-month deployment aboard the USS Tarawa (LHA-1). I am the flight surgeon
for marine helicopter squadron HMM-161 stationed out of Marine Corps Air
Station Miramar, CA. Our squadron is the air support for the 15th MEU
(Marine Expeditionary Unit). The entire MEU is made up of about 2000 marines
spread out over three ships with three doctors and one flight surgeon. As
the flight surgeon, I get to play doctor as well as fly! We fly CH-46 Sea
Knights, CH-53 Sea Stallions, UH-1 Hueys, AH-1 Super Cobras, and AV-8
Harrier jets. The 15th MEU began "work ups" August 2002, deployed January
2003, entered Kuwait in February 2003, and then entered Iraq in March 2003.
We've been supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom by flying throughout Iraq, from
Umm Qasr and An Nasiriyah in the south to Baghdad and as far north as Tikrit. |
